A Chair in the Garden

Do you make these lists?  Go to grocery store, drop off at Good Will, drop books at library, bank deposit, pick up birthday present….etc etc etc.  I sure do, I even try to figure out the most efficient path between errands.   (If I go to this store the library is on the way, but if I go to the bank first….)  As many of the recent posts have alluded to-there is a lot a busy and a lot of cramming things together.   Keep moving, keep crossing things off The List.  So when I was walking in the woods at my father’s place and came across a chair in the middle of nowhere I was perplexed.  Why is this chair here?  My dad is in better shape than I am-he certainly does not NEED to sit here to rest.  It just did not fit into my state of mind; go go go.  Then I found another, and another,  they were everywhere once I began to look: at the end of the wood pile, in the garden, facing the sunrise and in the cool afternoon shadows.

As I spend more time in this landscape, I realize that the pace of life is not any slower or more relaxed out here, there is a seemingly endless list of chores which should/could be done. (oh the lists I could make!)  To truly savor this life, this experience, sometimes you have to stop.  Stop the busy, put away the lists, put away the ’shoulds’ and the ‘coulds’.  Have a seat and enjoy the view.

I don’t have a chair in my garden, yet.  I plan to get one out there next weekend.  I hoping when I sit in my chair that I do not see the weeds to be pulled, or the bolted lettuce to be replanted, but enjoy the fruits of my labor and savor the sun on my shoulders.
Enjoy.
